When the GOP goes dark: Trump and the Republican party, in 2020

By Josh DawseyCNNHealth and Science WriterPresident Donald Trump and congressional Republicans are likely to avoid the 2020 election cycle, with a potential shutdown and partial government shutdown looming, the latest Gallup poll shows.

However, Gallup asked Americans whether they thought the GOP is a threat to the country, and 47% of those polled said the party is a positive force, while 43% said it is a negative force.

Gallup also asked Americans how likely they are to support Republicans in 2020, and the answers are a mixed bag: 42% said they are more likely to back the party than Democrats, while 36% said Democrats are more to their liking.

The survey, which was conducted from July 19-22, surveyed 1,006 adults, including 909 Republicans and 908 Democrats.
